The new 2017 Ford Explorer offers three different engines. The 3.5L Ti-VCT V6 delivers 290 horsepower and achieves a combined 20 EPA-estimated mpg when equipped with front-wheel-drive. The 2.3L EcoBoost engine has 280 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, producing plenty of power with a combined EPA-estimated 22 mpg. The 3.5L EcoBoost is the standard engine on the Sport and Platinum models, with best in class 365 horsepower.
The Explorer also offers four different driving modes depending on your terrain. Normal uses Intelligent 4WD with the Terrain Management System and is ideal for everyday driving on wet or dry paved roads. Hill Descent Control regulates your speed on steep declines. Sand mode has a more aggressive throttle progression, holding gears longer to help transfer optimized torque to the wheels. Mud,Rut has more aggressive torque, limiting transmission shifts and letting wheels spin to get you through the thick stuff. Snow, Gravel, Grass mode allows the transmission to deliver earlier upshifts and less aggressive engine torque distribution, limiting wheelslip to help improve traction on tricky terrain.
With the 3.5L V6 or 3.5L EcoBoost engine, Explorer can tow up to 5,000 lbs. Ford offers features such as a standard rear view camera, trailer sway control, and AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control to put you at ease.
The Explorer comes with a variety of tech features. The new SYNC3 infotainment system has an all-new easy-to-use interface. An 8" color LCD screen displays phone, audio, and navigation features. Enhanced voice recognition lets you give simple commands, place and answer calls, and control music. A capacitive touchscreen lets you pinch to zoom in navigation, and includes a swipe feature.
The Voice Activated Navigation System will give you detailed traffic information, plus current and forecasted weather, and fuel station locations and prices. It includes a 5-year subscription to SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link services. GPS is combined with available 3-D mapping and provides voice-guided turn-by-turn directions.
SYNC App Link allows you to use your voice to control compatible mobile apps through the SYNC 3 system.
Adaptive Cruise Control helps you maintain your choice of speed and preset gaps from the vehicle in front of you. It can also alert you to a potential collision.
The Lane-Keeping System can detect road markings and apply torque to the steering wheel if it detects your vehicle drifting into another lane. It can send you gentle vibrations in the steering wheel to prompt you to return to your lane.
Ford's BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) notifies you with a light in either sideview mirrors if it's sensors detect a vehicle in the corresponding blind spot. Cross-traffic alert warns you with a beep and a warning light in your sideview mirror if it detects a vehicle approaching either side as you slowly back out of a parking space.
